The value of perseverance
We don’t need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to explaining the path to success.
There are countless ways to define success and many great leaders throughout U.S. history have attempted to do so, and more importantly, have eloquently described how they personally obtained it.
Abraham Lincoln certainly had his share of disappointment – he was defeated ten times (yes, 10) in his pursuit to be elected to serve in public office. He also started a business in his early 20’s and failed. He declared bankruptcy at age 24 and spent 17 years paying off debts to friends. Yet, this renowned individual went on to be our 16th President and nearly 150 years later – is still revered and talked about by people both sides of the political aisle.
It certainly wasn’t Lincoln’s first stab at success when he finally achieved the status he desired. But it was his tenacious spirit in the face of disappointment that ultimately led him to the presidency.
Lincoln said, “Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed.”
In a 2012 Wall Street Journal article, it was noted that U.S. companies were recovering from the largest recession since World War II — companies such as Apple, Wells Fargo and Starbucks. During these times it was reported that all of these companies sharpened their pencil and focused on how they could outperform their competition in order to continue to succeed.
Another great leader, Winston Churchill said, “Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” That approach was clearly used by Lincoln and even great consumer brands like Apple – all who had to “saddle up” and stay focused on their vision and keep moving forward when met with setbacks.
